Losing a car key used to mean a quick trip to a hardware store. Today, most vehicles use transponder chips, key fobs, or push-to-start proximity sensors — and programming a replacement requires specialized equipment that most people don’t know a local mobile locksmith can handle on the spot.
What Is Car Key Programming?
Modern car keys do more than cut a physical shape. Inside most keys is a small electronic chip that communicates with your car’s immobilizer system. If the chip isn’t programmed correctly, the key will turn in the ignition but the engine won’t start. Key programming syncs that chip to your specific vehicle.
There are three main key types we see in the New River Valley:
- Transponder keys — the most common. A chip inside the key head communicates with the car.
- Key fobs / remote head keys — include a built-in remote for locking/unlocking with the physical key blade attached.
- Push-to-start / proximity keys — also called smart keys; the car senses the key in your pocket and lets you press a button to start.
Why Skip the Dealership?
Dealers charge $200–$500+ for key programming and often require you to tow the vehicle in — a process that can take days. Elliott Mobile Diagnostic & Programming comes to your location with professional-grade programming equipment and typically completes the job in under an hour. Our pricing is transparent and almost always less than dealer rates.
What Vehicles Do We Program Keys For?
We work on the vast majority of domestic and imported makes, including Ford, Chevrolet, Toyota, Honda, Nissan, Dodge, Jeep, Hyundai, Kia, and more. Call us with your year, make, and model to confirm availability before booking.
What If I Have No Working Keys At All?
This is called a “zero keys” situation and it’s more common than you’d think — especially after losing the last key or purchasing a used vehicle with missing keys. We can still program a new key on-site using our OBDII diagnostic tools, though the process takes a bit longer.
